Detroit’s own M Dot Taylor is a certified Rapper/Singer who is focused on his career, family, and goals. He is a military veteran who is now dedicating his time to music after giving 5 years of his life to the military. We recently caught up with Taylor and asked him a few questions about his music career & COVID-19.

When you started making music, how has your life changed?

I started making music around the age of 10 and recorded my first song when I was 12 years old. Growing up in Detroit, you’re prone to see things most people wouldn’t normally see due to the high crime rate, so we bond with music to share our pain and struggles. Music changed my life by giving me an outlet to talk about things I wouldn’t normally feel comfortable telling someone. Music feels more therapeutic to me, which helps me with my PTSD.

How do you think the COVID-19 pandemic altered the music industry?

I think the COVID-19 pandemic has altered the music industry in both negative and positive ways. For artists like myself that are up and coming the pandemic has slowed down the physical presence of the industry and allowed more influencers to spend more time at home and with their phones which increases the chances of them not only seeing your messages. For more established artists that’s riding the wave of a record with a buzz who looked forward to your money, but can’t tour due to club closures and social distancing, it affects them negatively.

What current projects are you working on that we can expect in the future?

Right now I’m locking in some fire singles that I’m looking forward to dropping over the next few months. Then ultimately I wanna put out a self titled album, to give you all kinds of glimpses into my life’s journey. I also wanna get into acting like Ice T did.

What would you tell upcoming artists trying to make it in the music industry?

Something I would tell artists trying to make it in the industry is to keep grinding. There’s not a date on success being given, the success comes from what the late great Nipsey Hussle lives by, and that’s The Marathon. That means you gotta do something every single day until you can’t grind no more. Life rewards the ambitious souls. So stay hungry!
